New $300 Wal-Mart PC is Bloatware-Free

4444444444.JPG

She ain't much to look at, but the Everex IMPACT GC3502 is a basic box, running a 1.5GHz VIA CPU, 1GB of RAM, 80GB of HDD and a DVD burner, and for $300 includes keyboard, mouse and speakers, but no monitor. Best of all it comes with Vista home, OpenOffice 2.2 and is free from craplets infestation.

We're glad Everex is taking a stand, and hope other mainstream companies see the writing on the wall and stop shoving AOL trial widgets down our throats. We know how to use PCs, and we want 'em shiny and new on the inside when we buy 'em. The PC isn't on Walmart's site yet, but it should be soon.

Sanyo Easy Streetnav NVM-4070 GPS

sanyo-nvm4070.jpg
Sanyo, not the first name you think of when you dream of GPS navigators, just came out with the NVM-4070, equipped with a 4-inch, 16:9 touchscreen, a SiRF Star III receiver, traffic, text-to-speech for reading off street names, 1.8 million points of interest, Video/Photo/MP3/WMA playback and an FM transmitter to get the nav and music channeled through your car stereo.

It also has Bluetooth for phone functionality, including address book sync and speakerphone. (I assume when a call comes in, it shows callerID and pauses your music, but don't quote me on that.) It has an SD card slot and a lousy 64MB of internal storage. My bet is at $500, it's not a big HDD. There's a $400 version (NVM-4050), which loses auto-rerouting, traffic, photo and video playback and the FM transmitter.

iLive’s Extra-Wide iPod Surround Speakerbar

510862046__iht3817dt.jpg

The iLive Flat Panel Docking System is a virtual surround sound bar that uses magnetically shielded 2 full mid/high range drivers and twin internal woofers. You can pretty much hook up whatever you want—DVD players, TVs, computers via USB, other audio players—but considering it has a specially built motorized tray that fits an iPod, we're guessing that's what iLive had in mind. The unit also has a headphone jack. Weird.

Now why would you plug in your iPod just to use the dock's headphone port? Once your iPod is docked, you can control it by the player's buttons, or by remote. It's got pretty much everything else you'd expect in the way of frills, from the usual AM/FM tuner to a backlit LCD clock that has an alarm, too. Expect to pay around $350.

Cellphone Transforms Into Deadly Robot

0602_000001_c3xqbk3t2z_1.jpg

Check out this transforming cellphone concept found over at Parkoz Hardware. It turns into a little bi-pedal bot, complete with twin miniguns. Definitely reminiscent of scenes from Michael Bay's Tranformers, with a little bit of Batteries Not Included, Short Circuit, and Robocop (ED-209, anyone?) Koreans get the coolest cellphones, so it figures their concepts are going to be kick-ass, too. Video of the miniguns chewing up a desk, post jump.

Ghetto Wii Wheel From Billet Mechanical Takes

wiighettowheel.jpg

If you thought the plastic-looking Nintendo Wii Mario Kart wheel was a little too classy, Billet Mechanical has the wheel for you. First, it's not even a wheel. It's a Knight Rider-like half steering wheel that has grips on the two ends for gripping. It's not like you're doing hand over hand on regular wheels anyway, but shaping it like a wheel is probably the least you can do for the authentic wheel experience.

Also, this thing is $44.95. We're guessing that some of your money goes into the aluminum and velcro build, which probably feels quite a bit nicer than plastic. The rest? Into the fantastic product design. But hey, if you're ever pretending you're Michael Knight, this and a talking watch with the voice of William Daniels will get you all the way home.

Further Playstation 3 Price Cut Predicted

ps3spittingcash.jpg

Capcom, the developer behind multiple treasured video game series such as Street Fighter and Resident Evil, is forecasting yet another substantial price cut for Sony's Playstation 3. Said Capcom Chief Financial Officer Kazuhiko Abe to reporters:

"…the price has been cut once and it is likely to be cut again towards the end of the year. I expect the (PS3's) installed base to grow gradually."

This prediction comes after last week's $100 drop in price, bringing the cheapest Playstation 3 to $500, and also because of the console's significant lag in sales behind the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360.

So what's in store for us next week? Yet another discount? Our hope: a Playstation 3 with every Happy Meal.

75-year-old has world’s fastest private internet connection

fast_internet.jpg

Swedish news site The Local reports that 75-year old Swede's home has been tricked-out with a record-breaking 40 Gb/s connection - the first time a private residence has tapped into the internet at such high speeds. The lightning fast Internet connection is thanks to the money and her son Peter Löthberg a Swedish optical internet guru working at Cisco. Ma Löthberg's house was converted into a broadband dog-and-pony act in an effort to promote high-speed fibre connections as a commercially viable platform. With such a connection she can download a DVD in 0.14 seconds and a HD-DVD in 3 seconds. The secret that stands behind this speed is in new modulation technique. This technique allows data to be transferred to de distances up to 2,000 kilometers directly between only two routers. This does not involve any intermediary transponders which makes the connection even faster.

Japanese Sophia Nani Is A Full Touchscreen Phone, Media Player

sophianani.jpg

It would seem that a certain black-and-silver phone has attracted a bit of a following in the design department. The Japan-only Sophia Nani, launching next week, sports a massive 4.3" touchscreen TFT display running at a crisp 800×400 resolution. A digital TV tuner rounds out a complete multimedia package, but one crucial feature will inevitably doom this newborn phone to the "design-only" box: Windows CE.

Yes, the beauty of the Nani is deceiving. The onboard WiFi capabilities will be handicapped by a sub-par web browser and multimedia capabilities will be bogged down by Windows Media Player 10. While the dual cameras are a unique addition (VGA in front, SVGA in back), the Nani boasts a simple Micro SD card slot in lieu of a more robust storage option like a hard drive. While it certainly won't challenge anything else out there for dominance of the phone/PMP market, the Sophia Nani is proof of the new design direction cell phones are heading in.
